There is not one simple cause that causes bacterial vaginosis. Since there are many different types of bacteria that live in the vagina, any type of imbalance of harmful bacteria in the vagina can cause this infection, a yeast infection or trichomoniasis. Even though there researchers are unable to determine one simple cause, they have suggested there can be several different things that can still cause this infection. Such as: douching, not using a condom during sexual intercourse, multiple sex partners as well as an intrauterine device for birth control.

Bacterial vaginosis, or BV for short, is known to affect 10%-64% of women at any given time in their life; however, it is most likely to occur during the child bearing age. Doctor’s and researchers also believe that this infection can have health risks during and pregnancies and even after some operations. It’s believed to have a higher risk of pelvic infections after procedures such as an abortion, hysterectomy and a c-section.
